My Mom and...

One day my mom introduced me to a person that I never met in my life. The person I met was named Vanessa. I thought Vanessa was just a friend at first, until she started coming with us to a lot of places. Especially my house. I didn't know what to expect at all.

I was at my dads house one day and my sister called me. She said "Mami just got engaged!"
   I said, "To who?"
  She said, "To Vanessa!"
.....wow, did.. this just.. happen? I was.. let's just say surprised. I would have never thought in a billion years that this would have happened. Then again I had a 9 year olds brain when this happened, but still. My mom was never really open to me and my sister before, so we had no clue. But I knew that since my mom was engaged there had to be a wedding. My mom was never engaged or married before so I never knew what her wedding would be like. So, this was going to be interesting.

The wedding was amazing! Everyone danced to Spanish, hip-hop, pop, and basically all types of music. We ate rice and beans, chicken, potatoe salad, macaroni and cheese, etc. Me and my sister were flower girls. Our dresses were white with a black thick belt going around it. Our hair was curled and put in a really pretty bun. My mom looked so beautiful in her white, long dress, and her hair/ makeup was on point too. That day was exciting, sad (but happy tears), and I had a lot of different emotions in me. I definitely wont forget that day.

About a month later when we bought a new house Vanessa and her son moved in with us. After a while, we finally got everything out the boxes and into the house. A couple of days later I went into the basement and I saw a poster board with some writing and some drawings on it. The title said Kareline and Vanessa's love story. I read it and it said that my mom and Vanessa met and dated in high school. I never knew that about my mom. But, they ended up breaking up and after high school my mom went with my dad. That is why I never knew my mom ever liked or dated a girl.

That experience led me down that now when I see gay or lesbian people I don't feel weird or awkward because I have experienced it with my mom and her wife. So, that was one experience in my life that was... very new to me. How would you feel if you were in my shoes?
